What I Want to Say after the Competition

Participating in the ‘2007 CCTV Star of Outlook English Talent Competition Shanghai Qualification’ is actually a great fun and I really enjoyed it, though many competitors (or enemies) were in anxiety and nerve. In fact, I took part in this competition not for to be the winner, but for to measure my English level whether it is good or bad. I always bear the Olympic Creed in mind, it goes,‘ The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win, but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered, but to have fought well.’ because it tells me that don’t care about the result of this competition too much. In this article, I’d like to introduce some of the essence which made me passed into the Shanghai Qualification’s final.

Confidence-it is the vital of importance in the competition. ‘Confidence’ here means believe yourself. If you yourself don’t believe yourself, how can others (or judges) believe you? However, confidence is based on the English level. (But I, probably, don’t need to say it, because anyone who took part in it should speak very good English, and then he dared to participate in it.) You can represent your confidence in many ways, for instance, the way you walk on the stage, the way you talk and the way you perform. But sometimes, especially in daily life, don’t be too confident. Because being too confident just equals to be arrogant. So it depends whether you can be confident or not.

Politeness-this not only goes in the competition, but also goes in everyday life. Politeness maybe isn’t the standard which the judges follow, but it can be the standard for the score of the impression. I think if you are polite to everyone in daily life, this will be no problem. On the contrary, if you are impolite, you might get into the trouble.

Smiling-this, actually, is the point which many contestant turn the deaf ears to. Picture this. Suppose one contestant doesn’t smile during the competition and seems very cold even though his English is excellent, while another contestant can’t speak as good as the first one, but he keep smiling and seems very friendly, the judges will definitely let the second one to pass. So this shows that smiling is of great importance. Maybe you would say that this case is just an assumption, but it could be happened.

Articulation-it also correlates with pronunciation. This is one of the standards which the judges will follow. You don’t have to speak as a British or an American, just speak clearly and well. Articulation is very important. If you don’t speak clearly, in Chinese, we will call that ‘speak with a grape in the mouth’. If you don’t want people call you ‘speak with a grape in the mouth’ then be articulate.

These essences can guide you through to the final. Now I passed into the final. There are a couple of people I want to thank. First, I want to thank my parents for encouraging me all the time.

Then, I’d like to thank Shanghai Four-promise Company for providing such a wonderful stage to show our English talents. Third, I want to thank the Shanghai Onlycollege, this great language training school. I have been their student for several years so far. The teachers are terrific. Fourth, I’d like to thank my primary school. I will leave this school by the end of June. The teachers not only teach me knowledge, but also tell me how to be a real person. These are the people I want to thank. I believe without these people’s help, I would never pass.

‘Life is like a chocolate box, you will never know what’s in it.’ That’s my favorite sentence. I think that if I work harder, miracle would show up.

My Ways to Learn English

Having been studying for five years of English, I have felt that learning English is both interesting and mysterious; you will never know what you will learn next. Experiences accumulate with the growing age; I’d like to share some of my ways of learning English.

First of all, the basic but also important, you need to be interested in it. Because there is a saying goes like this,‘Interest is the best teacher.’ It is true that one must be interested in something if one wants to do something. When I was seven years old, my father asked me whether I want to learn English. At that time, I think it must be interesting and exciting to learn another language, so I said ‘yes’. From that moment, I started to learn English.

Second, reciting is always the most effective way to learn English. I have recited many articles and beautiful essays. Since I was seven, I began to recite articles in the New Concept English. (Now I am still reciting the articles in it.) After a few months, my father found that many articles in the Crazy English were really good, so I recited the articles in the Crazy English at the same time. And then, I find that reciting does work when I am talking to someone in English. Until now, I am still using this way.

Third, reading foreign novels also works in learning English. At first, I didn’t realize it, but then I found that some of the expressions are very colloquial. Later on, I began to read a lot of novels or fictions in English version. So far, I have read six among the Harry Potter series, The Secret Garden, The Little Prince, Pollyanna, Animal Farm, Heidi and the like. So I suggest reading some novels.

Fourth, read after the tape. This is the way that many people don’t know, but I do. I often read after the tape when I have time. I have studied Family Album, U. S. A. and read after its tapes.

Fifth, practice your English when you have the chance. ‘Practice,’ says a proverb ‘makes perfect.’ Usually, I don’t have much time to practice, so I go to the English Corner every Sunday. At first, you probably can’t speak very well, but I believe after your practice, you can speak fluently. One thing you have to bear in mind: be brave, don’t afraid or scared to talk.

Sixth, writing diaries can help you a lot. It is very interesting because you can read the diaries you have written and recall the past. I write diaries everyday for I think writing diaries can help you review some of the sentence structures, vocabularies and also grammars.

Last but not least, a kind of way which most native English speaker does: the acquisition. It is a way of learning English naturally. For example, there are many signs which are written in English and Chinese. When you can’t understand some of the words, you can write it down and look for it in the dictionary after you get home.

There is a saying goes,‘The best knowledge is the knowledge about ways of learning. Therefore, I think these ways to learn English are the best knowledge and I am happy that I have acquired it. I believe that if I keeping working hard with these ways, I would arrive at success, this destination.
